ASTRONOMIA TODO DIADurante sua missão, a sonda Galileo registrou um grande número de imagens do único satélite natural da Terra, a Lua. A sonda Galileo passou pela Lua em 7 de Dezembro de 1992, no seu caminho com destino a Júpiter, o qual foi explorado pela sonda entre os anos de 1995 e 1997.
Esse mosaico colorido foi construído a partir da integração de 18 imagens feitas pelo sistema de imagens da sonda Galileo por meio de um filtro verde. No canto superior direito, pode-se observar uma mancha negra, que está relacionada com o Mar das Chuvas, na região central mais a esquerda é possível observar o Mar da Serenidade, na parte inferior a esquerda o Mar da Tranquilidade e o Mar das Crises, que é representado pela feição circular e negra na parte de baixo do mosaico. Também estão visíveis nessa imagem as planícies de lava negra das Bacias da Margem e Smythii, na porção inferior direita da imagem. A Bacia de Humboldt, uma estrutura de impacto com 400 milhas de diâmetro, parcialmente coberta com depósitos vulcânicos negros, pode ser vista no centro da imagem.
