O SDC, foi originalmente entregue a CANMAR Drilling Ltd., uma empresa subsidiária da Dome Petroleum Ltd., no início dos anos 80. Convertido a partir de um navio armazenador de óleo, o SDC se transformou num navio de perfuração.
A CANMAR foi adquirida pela Amoco Corporation, quando comprou a Dome Petroleum em 1987. Uma década depois, a companhia de perfuração foi vendida para um grupo de empresas liderado pela Livingstone Marine Co. Ltd. e posteriormente vendida para a Seatankers Management Co. Ltd..

Com 662 pés por 361 pés, com uma área de 110000 pés quadrados e pesando 80000 toneladas, o SDC é quase 3 vezes mais pesado do que o navio nuclear americano carregado de caças USS Lexington.
