ASTRONOMIA TODO DIAEssa imagem em falsa cor do aglomerado de galáxias conhecido como Quinteto de Stephan mostra claramente uma das maiores ondas de choque já observada (o arco de cor verde), produzido por uma galáxia caindo em direção a outra a uma velocidade de milhões de milhas por hora. Essa imagem foi construída com dados do Telescópio Espacial Spitzer da NASA e por um telescópio em Terra, localizado na Espanha. O que faz o Quinteto de Stephan ser tão fascinante são as raras bolhas vermelhas encontradas na NGC7320, a mais brilhante no grupo. Essas grandes regiões de HII guardam uma formação de estrelas hiper ativas. Telescópios Espaciais têm recentemente fornecidos novas idéias sobre a natureza dos estranhos filamentos verdes, que acredita-se agora ser uma onda de choque intergaláctica gigante, causada à medida que a NGC7318B colide com o centro do grupo , criando uma imensa onda de choque mais brilhante que a Via Láctea que se espalha pelo meio entre as galáxias, aquecendo parte do gás a temperaturas de milhões de graus, onde eles emitem raios-X detectáveis pelo Observatório de Raios-X Chandra, da NASA.
